Search Operators
In order to enter a search query as accurately as possible, search operators can be included in the query. The search in Serviceware Knowledge supports wildcard search (with the aid of *), phrase search (with the aid of “”) as well as the boolean search operators (AND and OR). If more than one search terms are entered without any operators, the search is automatically interpreted as AND search. The following table shows the search operators in more detail:
Operator |
Syntax |
Example |
* |
The * wildcard in SABIO translates to “Find a string containing my search term”. There are three different ways to utilize the *:
|
Finds content containing words beginning with roller, e.g. rollercoaster.
Finds content containing words ending with coaster, e.g. lowrider
Finds content with words containing eel, e.g. wheelchair, heel |
“” |
Phrase Search: By putting search terms in Double Quotations it is possible to create a phrase. This phrase is not interpreted any further and the phrase must be part of the content exactly as given for the content to be found. |
Search for: "I eat steak" finds content containing exactly the phrase I eat steak. Search for: I eat steak finds content containing the words I, eat and steak e.g. in the sentence I like to eat steak with pepper. |
AND |
When more than one search term is given, the search only finds content containing both terms. Explicitly stating the AND operator is only necessary when using complex search terms. |
Search for: parsley sage finds only content that contains the term parsley as well as the term sage. Search for: parsley AND sage finds only content that contains parsley as well as sage. |
OR |
Entering OR between two search terms allows to search for content containing either one or both of the search term. |
Search for: parsley OR sage finds content containing parsley or sage or both terms. |
